Salem Baptist Church – Taylorsville Baptist Church

IMG_0991For forty years. 1838-1878, people of the Baptist faith in the Taylorsville community met for worship at the Salem Baptist Church just off Old Alabama Road, beyond Euharlee Creek left of the bridge where the road forks to lead toward the Cross Roads community. The deed for this church was given by Benjamin Franklin Williams, a relative of the Williams and Cantrells of this area In 1903 the first church building in the Town of Taylorsville was about to be abandoned after some 25 years of use, and sold. The church site donated by 1. P. Davis and was located on Main Street (formerly known as Stilesboro Rd and at the location of the present home of Jerry and Rose Scott). The reason for the abandonment was caused by loss land and the water and mud had become a hazard to both pedestrian and horse-drawn carriage worshippers. Thus, during the pastorate of Bro D M, Pressley-, from fall of 1902 to October 1903, the members decided to build a new church on higher ground at a cost of $3,000.00. The membership had officially changed the name of the church on July 20, 1901 according to the minutes of the day; “On motion, change name of church from Salem to Taylorsville. The donor of the second site in Taylorsville was W M, Trippe, son-in-law of Israel P Davis who had granted the first site. Deed was dated one thousand nine hundred and three, A frame structure went up on the one acre of land on the Rockmart road (now Church Street) during the winter of 1903-1904 at a cost of $4000.00, one thousand more than stipulated. The members enjoyed their new home only six years. The church was destroyed by fire. On August 4, 1910, members of the church met at the Methodist church and agreed to build a new church building and appointed a committee to draw up plans for the building, cost not to exceed $6000.00. On Sept.10,1910 the Plans committee submitted their plans and they were rejected. A new committee was appointed. Finally the present brick structure was occupied on.May 11, 1911.
